Here at Kooky, we are proud to be a part of Buy Women Built, celebrating the fact that our company has been created and grown by a team of inspirational women.
We believe International Women’s Day should be celebrated every time it comes around, and in this blog, we’re going to tell you a little bit more about this special event, and how you can get involved.
What is International Women’s Day
International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8th.
It's a day dedicated to honouring the achievements of women across the globe, regardless of their national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political differences.
The day serves as an opportunity to reflect on progress made, to call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
Since it was founded in the early 1900s in America and subsequently spread across Europe and the rest of the world, IWD has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration.
Each year, the UN chooses a theme for IWD to focus on specific issues facing women around the world. Themes over the years have covered issues such as gender equality, women's rights, and the plight of violence against women.
International Women's Day is not only a day to celebrate the achievements and progress made towards gender equality but also a reminder of the work that still needs to be done.
It's a call to action for accelerating gender parity and empowering women in all aspects of life.
Celebrations and events take place worldwide, including marches, rallies, art performances, and discussions focused on women's achievements and issues.
It's a day for reflection, advocacy, and action, both globally and at community level, and at Kooky, we are proud to play our role in this event.
How Kooky is Celebrating International Women’s Day This Year
Here at Kooky, we support and celebrate women across the globe all year round, and IWD is a great chance to highlight this and do anything more that we can to help out.
For example, last year, we worked with Women for Women International to sponsor another sister, Rose, who resides in South Sudan with her six children.
As a part of the Buy Women Built group, we are also providing hints and tips, straight from the mouth of one of our founders, on how women can forge their own pathways and create successful businesses, just like ours.
We believe this day is a great time to reflect on the amazing work that is taking place across the globe by women, and just scrolling through some of the amazing companies that are associated with these various charities and organisations shows the great work taking place.
On this day, of all days, we should be proud of that.
How You Can Celebrate International Women’s Day
If you are looking to celebrate this International Women’s Day, then here are five great ways you can do this:
- Support Women-Owned Businesses – Make a conscious effort to purchase from businesses owned and run by women, not just on IWD but as a regular practise to support economic empowerment.
- Attend or Organise Events – There are many ways you can meet likeminded people to celebrate, including seminars, workshops, or even simply meeting for a cup of tea and a chat.
- Work with Women’s Charities – We have already mentioned the work we do with Women for Women International, and there are many other great charities out there which need funding and attention. This year, why not pledge to do your bit to raise awareness for some of the great causes centred around women across the world?
- Self-Reflection and Education – This is a great day to reflect on your own beliefs regarding gender equality. Consider making personal commitments to educate yourself further and do what you can to support.
- Spread Awareness – Whether through social media posts or events, why not make a pledge to raise awareness this year? Whether it’s for women-led businesses, charities, or simply sharing stories, then a quick post can make a big difference.
