FODMAPS: More than a Gut Feeling

FODMAPS: More than a Gut Feeling

March 13, 2023

FODMAPs are all the rage at the moment but what exactly are they? FODMAPS (Fermentable Oligosaccharides Disaccharides Monosaccharides and Polyols) are actually a group of sugars that aren't completely digested or absorbed in our intestines and have earned themselves a bad name amidst the IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) community.

They move slowly in the small intestine, attracting water. And when they move into the large intestine, they are fermented by gut bacteria, producing gas. It is this extra water and gas that cause the intestinal wall to stretch and expand, resulting in pain and discomfort, especially in IBS sufferers who are already predisposed to a highly sensitive gut and slow motility (the speed at which contents pass through the intestines).

WHERE ARE FODMAPS FOUND?

FODMAPs are found in a wide range of foods, such as fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, nuts, legumes and confectionery.

HOW IS THE FODMAP CONTENT OF FOOD DETERMINED?

The team of experts at Monash University have conducted intensive lab analysis to ascertain the FODMAP content of more common foods, classifying them as LOW, MODERATE or HIGH. This information is accepted as the holy grail.

WHO SHOULD OBSERVE A LOW FODMAP DIET?

This is intended for those with medically-diagnosed IBS and is now recommended as the 1st treatment choice. However, being mindful of what we consume and incorporating more low-FODMAP foods has proven to be beneficial to many, with IBS symptoms improving in 75% of those who follow FODMAP guidelines!

BENEFITS OF A FODMAP DIET:

These include reduced abdominal pain & discomfort, reduced bloating & distension, improved bowel habits (a reduction in diarrhoea and constipation) and a better quality of life.
