I knew there must have been some sort of sorcery behind freeze dried fruit when it was the only way my fussy toddler would consume his 5 a day. Fruit averse, he would happily crunch on freeze dried mango and even ask for more – music to my mummy ears! This, however, is more than hocus pocus. It is a Sciencey magic called Lyophilisation, first deployed by the clever folk at NASA who needed a lightweight, portable, nutrient rich food for its astronauts. Welcome to Kooky: launching our unique line of freeze-dried fruit and gently-dried fruit, with diversity, culture, and acceptance at the core of our values.
Just like co-founders, Aline and Deena, Kooky’s selection of fruit have truly international roots. While the product range is specially sourced in Thailand, they actually have global origins. Jackfruit is native to South India while dragon fruit is borne of the cactus plant and is originally from Mexico and Central America. Many botanists believe the mangosteen had its origins in Malaysia or Indonesia. Bananas and mangoes probably need no introduction and different varieties, with varied taste profiles, can now be sourced from many countries, ranging from Spain to Africa!
Kooky is an adjective, born in 1959, by American English teenagers, possibly as a shortening of the word cuckoo. It is now defined, in the Cambridge Dictionary, when related to a person as strange in his or her appearance or behaviour, especially in a way that is interesting. Crazy, funky, odd, peculiar or unconventional are all synonyms of kooky. This perfectly defines our range of tropical fruit which come with their own unusual, quirky and uniquely beautiful look!
